Rumi Background In English Mevlana is sometimes spelled as Mawlana Jalal Al-Din (or Jalaluddin) Rumi. His name Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi stands for Love and ecstatic flight into the infinite. Rumi is known as the founder of the Mawlawi Sufi order which is a close mystical relative of Islam. Rumi is known as a genius poet and one of the great spiritual masters of mankind. Rumi was born to a family of learned Persian theologians in Balkh (Afghanistan) in 1207. Escaping the Mongol invasion and destruction, Rumi and his family traveled extensively in the Muslim lands. He performed pilgrimage to Mecca and finally settled in Konya, Anatolia, then part of Seljuk Empire. Rumi succeeded his father, Bahaduddin Valad in 1231 as professor in religious sciences. At 24 years old, Rumi was an accomplished scholar in religious and positive sciences. Mevlana Mausoleum This historic location became a museum in 1927, four years after the establishment of the Turkish Republic. It is one of the most visited museums in Turkey with more than two million visitors a year. Philosophy He was introduced into the mystical path by a wandering dervish, Shamsuddin of Tabriz. His doctrine advocates unlimited tolerance, positive reasoning, goodness, charity and awareness through love. To him and to his disciples all religions are more or less truth. Looking with the same eye on Moslem, Jew and Christian alike, his peaceful and tolerant teaching has appealed to men of all sects and creeds.
